McDonald's Croatia

Anything but normal - the Balkans in 1995

There are no routine jobs for us. Each job has its own very special attraction and under normal circumstances we don’t lose our nerves or our good mood even with nightshifts, bureaucracy or language barriers. But in the case of McDonald's Croatia the "we’d go through fire and flame for our customers!" approach took on a very real and almost macabre meaning.

In November 1995 the peace agreements after the Balkans war were just about to be signed. Croatia could slowly draw a deep breath again and prepare to return to a normal life. Nevertheless there was still heavy fighting, the streets of Zagreb, marked by the civil war, were deserted as McDonald's Croatia made its contribution to the reconstruction.

For Mangelberger the building of the first restaurant in Zagreb, Jurisiceva 3, was an unusual project in all respects. Due to the catastrophic infrastructure and the flight of many natives into safe areas, the Mangelberger team, in addition to the actual contract, took care of the supply of the standard switchboard, the entire electrical installation work including the project planning and the procurement of the lighting. Electrical installation – when the bombs are going off outside. It’s not the kind of thing we’d like to do every day, but if it’s required, then we’ll even do that.

Since the opening of this first Croatian McDonald's restaurant we are part of the team. Still to this day.
